A rousing, evidence-based vindication of the generalist approach to success A few months ago, I saw this as-yet-unreleased title (which Amazon sooo craftily put in front of my eyeballs) and thought, "I MUST HAVE THIS BOOK. Preferably yesterday." In addition to my interest in the science of it, I badly needed the ego boost, because that generalist guy *is* me. So I pre-ordered it, which I rarely do with an author I have no experience with.The book does not disappoint. Epstein emphasizes that even though stories like those of golfer Tiger Woods and the chess-master Polgar sisters get all the attention, real life just isn't like golf or chess. Those activities happen in "kind" environments, where rules are few, goals are simple, and progress is easy to measure. Real life operates in the "wicked" domain, where rules are myriad, goals change, and there is no simple measure of progress. In complex environments, those whose brains have trained to deal with a lot of different situations -- i.e. the generalists -- perform a lot better.In addition to a recap of the science of learning and expertise, Epstein digs up valuable nuggets from the literature on improved problem-solving, the proper fit between talent and career, and optimizing education for versatility. I also loved the stories of the unsung badasses that I'd heard little of, like three-time accidental CEO Frances Hesselbein, and the "figlie del coro" multi-instrumental virtuoso women of baroque-era Venice.This is a great book and a fun, quick, well-written read. Take heart, ye restless career-hoppers, that many if not most people operating at the highest levels of human accomplishment -- rafts of Nobelists, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Roger Federer -- were generalists who got a relatively late start at their metier and achieved greatness not in spite of it, but because of it. More aggressive and lacks the charm of his first book Like his first book, Unfuck Yourself, this book is a no-nonsense indictment towards self-reflection. It asks the reader to name and examine their fundamental conclusions about their self, others, and life, arguing that these fundamental conclusions, which are developed early in life, are necessarily negative and are the reasons we self-sabotage. I take issue with his insistence that these conclusions are necessarily negative and that they are impossible to change via meditation, etc. He argues that the solution to self-sabotage is essentially to notice, accept, and move beyond these conclusions, by cultivating a compelling vision for our future (rather than being driven by the ghosts of our past). Overall, I found the introspection somewhat useful, and his approach to uncovering our conclusions attractive in its simplicity. However, the “solution” or rather “transcendence” portion of the book seemed hastily written and not given proper thought. It lacks the ability to inspire the reader and instead, like much of the book, comes across almost like scolding. The tone of the book struck me as overly provocative, in a way that is supposed to shatter the reader’s current perspective on life, but instead makes one question the absolute certainty with which the author draws his conclusions. The author offers little recourse to restoring the confidence he seems so eager to steal away. Basically, the book reminds me of a Zen master striking his student with a stick, but providing no real, substantial instruction as to how to improve above and beyond “do better.” I very much enjoyed his first book and was rather disappointed by this one.Great reality check and wake up call of my life! Gary's book is an in your face, no nonsense, wake up call; similar to his Unfuck Yourself book. However, with this one, Gary goes deeper into why we are sabotaging ourselves and also gives methods on how to stop doing that shit! If you need something to really rattle your cage and help you get out of your own way, read this book!Spot On!!! I have read both books and to say they hit an absolute home run is an understatement. This book is written with humor, but is raw and causes any person to evaluate what they are allowing in their lives. I struggle with PTSD and severe panic disorder, this book awakens a lot of why I trigger so badly and has given me tools to maybe head some of these thoughts and fears off. I read the entire book in one sitting, but I have read it again multiple times finding more and more to highlight and refer back to. I certainly hope there are more books to come!

Critical design flaw The content in this book is decent page by page, but it has a critical design flaw. The book covers both SSAT and ISEE at the lower, middle and upper levels. That is six different tests at three very different levels of difficulty, all crammed together into one chunky book. There is very little guidance as to which material is on which test, which might be obvious to a teacher, but not to a student or parent. There are occasional headings, "Middle and upper level only", but they are few and far between, are not very conspicuous, and there's a lot that's not labeled (e.g., trigonometry) that is clearly only relevant for the upper levels.The result is a VERY frustrating book that can really only be used by an experienced teacher who already knows what material they need to cover. The book might also be useful as a source of practice tests, but there's only one of each type of test.If I were designing this book, I would be splashing a banner across the top of every page to clarify what grade level it was for. Or, I would print separate volumes. Studying for these tests is already stressful enough for students without having to see and triage material that is too difficult.

I love this book but the printing of it is screwed ... I love this book but the printing of it is screwed up in quite a few places. The first mishap I noticed were pages 36/37 for the Calorie/Points tracker. It starts with ‘Friday-Sunday’ BEFORE Monday-Thurs. One misprint I can handle, but then it happens AGAIN on pages 42-43. I included pictures of the mis prints of pages 42-45. Super disappointed I recieved a ‘dud’ copy.Out of order Love the idea, but like others have said - the pages are out of order. The example in the book is correct so this should be a very embarrassing error on the publisher’s part. I will attempt to continue using it because I spent money on this, but it’s disappointing and I think those of us who purchased this should be offered a replacement free of charge.Issues Fixed, Great Planner Whatever issues existed in the first printing seem to be fixed...all pages are accounted for and in order.
