This is a lovely and important book for children. I wish I had had this book as a child. I think it's important for children to learn that it's fine to "have moods" or "be grumpy." It's OKAY for children--and girls especially--to not have to "please" all the time or always be "on." I am getting this book for all children under 10 that I know. 10 might be a too-advanced upper limit. Lovely illustrations. Thumbs up.I know this book has really good reviews but we spend time telling our grandchildren they ... A fascinating look at Hitler and the Third Reich This is one of the most fascinating books on the Third Reich and Germany that I have ever read. In light of the crises that exist in contemporary America over drugs and methamphetamines it is amazing to see that Germany was going through the same crises and even more interesting to learn that many of the drugs of abuse that are common in contemporary society were developed by the Nazis.At the center of the story is Dr. Theodor Morell - a relatively obscure and not that well credentialed doctor - who became Hitler's drug dealer/supplier. Through extensive archival research, Norman Ohler was able to discover records that show Hitler's extensive drug use/abuse and track Morell's records of the kinds of drugs that he was giving Hitler. With the drugs that Morell was giving Hitler, its amazing that he even survived as long as he did.Parallel to the story of Hitler's drug use, Ohler also shows how the Nazis used drugs to enhance the performance of soldiers. Sleep was the enemy of the soldier in battle. With drugs, the Nazis sought to win that battle and passed out "uppers" to troops on a massive scale."The fact was that between the autumn of 1941, when (Hitler) started being given hormone and steroid injections, and the second half of 1944, when first the cocaine and the above all the Eudodal kicked, Hitler hardly enjoyed a sober day." Pharmacology ruled and influenced Hitler and the outcome of the war.This book is a real page turner that gives a fascinating look into the life of Adolph Hitler and the Third Reich. Throughout the book, one wonders if history would have been different if this unknown doctor had not used his drugs on Hitler. How many lives could have been saved? What Ohler does not go into is the effect that the use of these drugs had on the hundreds of thousands of soldiers and members of the German population that used these drugs, which were available without a prescription and were widely available during much of the war. Where there long term physiological and physiological effects on those persons? That's a topic for another book and further research but it raises interesting questions.Drug Abuse Has Serious Consequences This book covers not only the drug use by Hitler, but by the entire Germanic people from the perid after the Kaiser throw in the towel and ran to Holland. This marked the end amd loss of first war by Prussia. The amounts of amphetamins, morphine, and heroin idustrially produced were in the millions. Soldiers abused it, Generals abused it, even mothers, fathers, and kids use it. Contrary to criticism, the writer does not condone the atrocities comitted under the Third Reich. He simply chronicles the drug abuse that developed, the maladies habitual users suffered: rages, paranoia, nervous breakdown (one official shot himself) , and muscle skeletal pains.Yes, any war is hell, but if add millions of tablets of Prvatin(amphetamine) you have chaos. Great read.Your view of WWII will be changed. I first learned of this book when the author was interviewed on NPR/Fresh Air. I could not believe what I was hearing. But, the actual book is as advertised...it will challenge and in my case, change forever your ideas about WWII. Who knew? Meth? been around forever. Hitler zonked and pumped out of his mind for years by his personal physician? The entire German war machine on drugs? Dunkirk evacuation works because Hitler issued stop order to the army from attacking the trapped allied forces.Just read it. Too many things to include in a review.

I loved the book The story was great and very unexpected plot lines. I also liked the writing style and want to read more from this author.3.5 STARS...I did not have this all figured out! This does start pretty slow, but it's not a long book, and once the story gets rolling it's bat**** crazy in a way that kept my attention.Susan and Paul have recently moved from Dublin to the country. They're the kind of obnoxious parents who snipe at each other about their parenting: You're smothering her! You're not paying enough attention! Susan seems to notice these qualities in other people, but not herself. Susan and Paul aren't particularly likable, and both are less so as the story unfolds.Amelia goes missing and things start to hit the fan. There are chapters about Susan's life 15 years prior and how it all connects to present day. More and more is revealed and though I did guess some of what was happening, I did not see that ending coming at all! Tangled web doesn't even begin to describe it...Kindle First pickHard to get into Like another reviewer says, this book goes into too many details about minor everyday actions. After about 30% into the book, I had to skip to 70% and finish because the book was too boring. I also wanted to gag every time the author used the word "tummy" which was multiple times. It's like an adult saying they need to go "potty".

Reacher is Back!!! I have read every Jack Reacher novel and generally looked forward to a new release like that of a favorite band or movie. Anticipation and excitement! In this case I got my copy of “Blue Moon”, grabbed a bag of Fritos and a cold drink and settled in for a good read.I was slightly hesitant, because the last two Reacher novels were not very good – at least not by Lee Child’s standards. The parts of Reacher that resonated most with readers had been missing. The last two novels felt like they had been phoned in. I was worried that maybe Jack Reacher had hit the end of the road…I had nothing to worry about it – Reacher is back! All of the character traits that made Jack Reacher a great protagonist are back in style. He calculates the physics of a thrown punch. He helps the downtrodden and beats up the bad guys. He prefers sitting in the back seat of cars because he’s so big and doesn’t like to drive!Without spilling too much detail, Reacher befriends the Shevicks, an elderly couple who is down on their luck. They’re in a jam with the worst kind of mobsters and Reacher jumps in with both feet to help them out. In the end, he takes on multiple gangs, wins every fight and gets the girl…Yes, Lee Child has a formula – and it’s a simple one. Make the bad guys bad, the victims sad and put Reacher into the mix. This time he gets a little help from some other bit players, but it’s mostly Reacher’s game. The plots are not complicated and there are holes in the story lots of “What-ifs” if you want to dig deep, but it’s great summer reading and all the pieces of the puzzle don’t need to be perfect for the tale to be told.I ended up reading most of the book in one evening; the rest the next morning – a very satisfying read.For fans of Lee Child and Jack Reacher, you will enjoy this book!Reacher in peak form, nothing better There's a strict formula to Reacher novels: big man gets off a bus in a small town, bumps into bad men doing bad things to decent people.In this case, it's an unnamed town ruled by rival factions of Ukrainians and Albanians, and an older couple in deep to a loan shark on the Ukraine side. Reacher steps in, intending to do one small good deed, but things escalate -- as they tend to do, in Reacher's world -- and within a day, Reacher finds himself in the middle of an escalating gang war, where the two factions agree on only one thing: get rid of the big ugly guy. His only real ally: a younger, dark-haired waitress who likes to "do one thing a day that scares me " and gets involved in the action for no good reason, really, but she's fun, so why not?After twenty-something books, Lee Child has the formula dialed in. Some outings are better than others, and this is right at the top. The action starts immediately and does not let up. I had to put the book down periodically just to settle my nerves; Reacher does not get that chance himself. He's dealing with not one, but two, sets of bad guys, with an ugly assist from a broken health care and judicial system that put the old folks in this situation in the first place. There's also a welcome steady pulse of humor in the book, as when the waitress notes to Reacher as he prepares to go after two men in a car, "They both have guns," to which he responds, "For now. In a minute I will have them."As usual, it becomes impossible to see how Reacher is ever going to solve these problems; and as usual, he does, in ways that are both blunt force and crafty.Sometimes I do wish that Reacher would evolve a bit; I was sad, a few books ago, when Lee Child raised the possibility of Reacher having a daughter; it would be good to see his universe expand a bit, to expand the stakes of his life. But as long as he's living like a modern day Shane, riding into town, kicking butt, and riding out again, I'll admit: no one does it better.Initially Comic Plot Soon Turns to Bloody Carnage In the beginning, BLUE MOON: A JACK REACHER NOVEL is comical (like a Donald Westlake novel), as Reacher inadvertently sets off a Ukrainian/Albanian gang war by killing two Albanian quick-loan enforcers. The rival gangs’ misinformed leaders (Dino, Gregory) start knocking off each other’s men, two by two, as they try to keep the score even. But the fun soon shifts to grim bloody carnage, once the gang leaders identify Reacher as the catalyst for their losses.In the novel, Reacher thwarts the robbery of an old man (Aaron Shevick), takes Shevick’s place in repaying an Albanian mafia loan, and then becomes personally committed to recovering money that Shevick desperately needs. Shevick’s daughter was severely wronged by the now-missing head (Trulenko) of a startup software company, who pocketed the company’s cash and let it go bankrupt. The Ukrainians are protecting Trulenko, who still has the cash.Both the Albanian and Ukrainian capos eventually--and still mistakenly--decide that “Shevick” (actually Reacher) is a person sent in by outsiders to start a gang war and let the rivals knock each other off so that the outsiders can move in. Can Reacher stay out of the gangs’ grasp for long enough to set things right for Shevick?The novel is an exciting page turner with a lot of drama. While it’s unlikely that Reacher’s complex tactics would have succeeded in real life, they’re totally believable in the context of the novel. The supporting characters (Abby, Hogan, Barton, Vantresca, Aaron and Maria Shevick) are likeable and interesting. Jack Reacher fans won’t be disappointed, as Reacher performs at his crusader best.
